Skills Week : Architectural Model Making

In this week, we were learning new skills related to our progression route. Usually for the previous projects, I have designed digital models using software but this time, I have to also make architectural model for my final project. So, it was important for me to learn some new skills that can be useful for me in my project. In architecture, models are made at different stages of the design process and are just as important to a project's development as sketches. Making conceptual models frequently happens with the project's initial sketches and creative brainstorming.

We were given out a handout for the general measurements to make the model using mountboard, cardboard and glue to stick all the cut piece together. The tutor gave us all the instructions by showing a demo of how to cut the the mountboard and to be careful using the craft knife.

Firstly, using the safety ruler, I measured all the length and width and then marked on the mountboard. Then, I used the craft knife to make four cuts to cut all the shapes as in the front, rear, east and west part of the model. For the roof, I cut a piece of the board leaving some edges on all sides and made a hinge cut on the middle.

Secondly, I poured glue in a small cup and mixed with a little bit of water and apply it on every edge that will be stick together. I used clear acetate paper for the front and rear part windows. Moreover, for the east and west windows, I used blue acetate paper and glued them on the model.

Lastly, for the base, I could have just used a normal gray board but I wanted to do something new so, I used cardboards and cut some irregular shapes and made every next piece bigger than the previous one. Then I glued them together and placed the house on its place surrounded by safety boundary as in wall and beautiful landscape.

This is my final model and I really enjoyed the whole workshop as I got to learn something new and I use this new experience in my project.

  1. Okay, clear DESCRIPTION of the task - not much in the way of reflection on how you might use this process/technique in your project. Bit more detail needed!
