Welcome To My Blog!

Hello, everybody! I am Jannatul Ferdoushi Riya. I am a student studying in Art & Design at De Montfort University. After completing my course, I am majoring as an Architect. I am creating blogs to post my academic research and works & explore more in Arts & Design.

Architecture is both an important and complicated science and an art. I think that anyone who has ever designed a building or is currently doing so is a true artist who expresses ideas in many ways. The world has always treasured the creations of renowned architects and respected the artistry of architecture. In this blog, I am sharing the process and the things that inspire me to be an architect. While growing up in my country, there was an exclusive architecture which really caught my mind and intrigued my thoughts. National Parliament House is the architecture piece.

National Parliament House

'National Parliament House is the house of the Parliament of Bangladesh, located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka. Designed while the country was still part of Pakistan by architect Louis Kahn, the complex is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world, covering 200 acres. Jatiya Sangsad was designed by Louis Kahn. The government sought assistance from South Asian activist and architect Muzharul Islam who recommended bringing in the world's top architects for the project. He initially attempted to bring Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier, who were both were unavailable at the time. Islam then enlisted Kahn, his former teacher at Yale.[4] Construction was halted during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and was completed on 28 January 1982. Louis Kahn died when the project was approximately three-quarters completed and it continued under David Wisdom, who worked for Louis Kahn. Kahn's key design philosophy optimizes the use of space while representing Bengali heritage and culture. External lines are deeply recessed by porticoes with huge openings of regular geometric shapes on their exterior, shaping the building's overall visual impact. In the architect Louis Kahn's own words:

In the assembly I have introduced a light-giving element to the interior of the plan. If you see a series of columns you can say that the choice of columns is a choice in light. The columns as solids frame the spaces of light. Now think of it just in reverse and think that the columns are hollow and much bigger and that their walls can themselves give light, then the voids are rooms, and the column is the maker of light and can take on complex shapes and be the supporter of spaces and give light to spaces. I am working to develop the element to such an extent that it becomes a poetic entity which has its own beauty outside of its place in the composition. In this way it becomes analogous to the solid column I mentioned above as a giver of light.

It was not belief, not design, not pattern, but the essence from which an institution could emerge...[6]

The lake on three sides of the Bhaban, extending up to the Members' hostel adds to site's aesthetics and also portrays the riverine beauty of Bangladesh. The Parliament building received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989.[7] ' - Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban - Wikipedia

Construction stages of the tower

Eiffel Tower is one of the another architectures which fascinates me a lot because of it's building history, the architect and what it's represents. The tower was built by the famous French Engineer Gustave Eiffel. Gustave Eiffel is best known for designing and constructing the iconic Eiffel Tower, which was constructed for the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition, as well as for his assistance in the construction of the Statue of Liberty in New York. Eiffel concentrated on study in meteorology and aerodynamics after leaving the engineering industry, making substantial contributions in both areas. Since it's opening, it is still the centerpiece of  Paris cityscapes.

'During the centenary of French Revolution, the French Government was organizing the International Exposition of 1889 to celebrate, a competition was held for designs for a suitable monument. More than 100 plans were submitted, and the Centennial Committee chose that of the noted bridge engineer Gustave Eiffel. When completed, the Eiffel Tower served as the entrance gateway to the exposition. It was initially built to serve as the entrance gateway to the International Exposition of 1889 as well as a testament to French industrial ingenuity. It has since come to represent the distinct character of the city of Paris. Its lights are also often turned on or off to reflect commemoration of major world events.'- Wiki | Golden

The famous architects Louis Kahn, Muzharul Islam & Gustave Eiffel have inspired me to come out of my protective shell and explore the outer world and innovations with their masterpieces of architecture.
This architecture pieces have inspired me to be an architect specially the National Parliament House and feel the magic of infrastructure world which is building up a liveable society.
